Collection of Grassroots Art, New Crossroads
South Africa, 2006 - 2007
In June 1976 hundreds of high schools students in the South African Township of Soweto started a march to protest for better education. The police responded with tear gas and gunfire which left at least 3 of the children dead. This was the inspiration for other protest marches of students and residents throughout the country against the oppressor regime of Apartheid and marks the beginning of the revolution. These drawings and paintings are selected creations of primary school and high school students living in a Township today. Their intention is to document there state of consciousness which represents their living situation.
